THE STRENGTH OF A PURE HEART: A PATH TO TRUE FREEDOM

INTRODUCTION: THE PURITY OF HEART AND ITS SPIRITUAL GREATNESS

The purity of heart is a profoundly significant spiritual virtue that, although often associated with chastity, goes far beyond physical desires. While chastity is an important expression of bodily purity, purity of heart, as Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, encompasses the entire inner life of a person, their mind, intentions, and their relationship with God and others. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8). This promise from Christ is one of the most direct and powerful regarding the value of this virtue: inner purity, the cleansing of the soul, allows us to see God.

When we speak of purity of heart, we refer to an inner disposition, to the integrity of a person who directs all their thoughts, desires, and actions toward God, without anything dividing them. A pure heart is a heart that seeks God with a sincere intention, without selfishness, hypocrisy, or deceit. The saints have taught throughout the centuries that purity of heart is essential not only for personal holiness but also for finding true happiness and freedom in this life.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PURITY OF HEART AND CHASTITY

Purity of heart, in this sense, is much broader than chastity. While chastity regulates the proper use of sexuality, purity of heart encompasses all areas of life. It is a total commitment of the soul to God, a heart that is not led astray by the world’s distractions or selfish interests. This inner purity is reflected in sincerity, transparency, and coherence between what one thinks, feels, and does.

The saints, especially those who guided young people like Saint John Bosco, knew that this purity was the foundation of an authentic Christian life. For Saint John Bosco, a young person with a pure heart was a young person who lived with joy, who found strength in purity to resist the world’s temptations. He taught that purity of heart was not a burden but a source of joy and inner freedom because a pure heart is freed from the chains of sin and the tensions of a divided life.

OBSTACLES TO A STRONG HEART: THE CULTURE OF SELFISHNESS

On the other hand, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux emphasized that the greatest obstacle to purity of heart is selfishness, that is, the egoism that clouds one’s vision and divides the heart. For him, a pure soul is one that seeks God in everything and detaches itself from disordered desires. Saint Bernard saw purity of heart as a requirement for seeing God in all things and for living in constant communion with Him.

In today’s world, purity of heart seems like an increasingly difficult virtue to achieve, especially for young people, bombarded by constant distractions, materialism, and a culture that promotes individualism. The heart of young people is often divided between the concerns of this world and the deep desire for true peace and joy, which can only be found in God. Saint Teresa of Avila taught that a heart distracted by worldly things loses sight of its ultimate goal, which is union with God.

THE MEANS TO ACHIEVE A PURE AND STRONG HEART

The saints have taught that purity of heart is achieved through a life of prayer, penance, and sacraments. Saint Francis de Sales, in his Introduction to the Devout Life, insists that daily prayer purifies the soul and elevates it to greater intimacy with God. Frequent confession and participation in the Eucharist are concrete means that cleanse the heart from the stains of sin and renew it in grace.

Moreover, spiritual reading and meditation on the lives of the saints help young people keep their hearts free from worldly attachments, allowing them to direct their gaze toward eternity. Saint Teresa of Avila affirmed that through deep and constant prayer, the soul is gradually purified and led to a more intimate union with God.

THE FRUIT OF PURITY: THE VISION OF GOD AND INNER PEACE

The greatest fruit of a pure heart is the vision of God, not only in eternity but also in this life. Those with a pure heart can perceive God’s hand in everything, finding meaning and purpose in every circumstance, and living with a peace that the world cannot offer. This peace is not the absence of problems but the certainty that, no matter what happens, the soul is firmly rooted in God.

For young people, a pure heart is the path to true happiness. In a world that offers so many illusions of success and pleasure, purity of heart is the key to true fulfillment. A young person with a pure heart knows what they want, lives with purpose, and is not deceived by the false promises of an ever-changing world. As Saint John Bosco taught, the true strength of a pure heart is found in God and the joy of living in His presence.

INSPIRING QUOTES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

• Saint John Bosco: “A pure heart is a heart full of joy. True happiness is found in a pure life and in friendship with God.”

• Saint Bernard of Clairvaux: “A clean heart is the reflection of a soul that does not seek itself but lives only for God. The pure soul is the one that seeks to see the hand of its Creator in everything.”

• Saint Francis de Sales: “The heart that is with God is like a clean mirror that reflects His divine light. Let us purify our hearts to be worthy of such light.”

CONCLUSION: PURITY OF HEART AS A DIGNIFIED AND HOPEFUL BATTLE

Purity of heart is not an unattainable state reserved for a few; it is the fruit of a constant struggle, a path that involves daily effort, falls, and getting up again and again. In the life of every young person, purity of heart is forged not only through the practice of virtue but also in the process of learning to distance oneself from evil, avoid the occasions of sin, and, most importantly, to frequently turn to confession to receive forgiveness and the grace that renews and strengthens us.

This path is not without difficulties or temptations. Saint John Bosco, who dedicated his life to guiding young people, understood that we are all prone to fall, but he also taught that the key is not to be discouraged. The struggle for purity of heart is a noble battle, one that is worth fighting because, in that struggle, true freedom is forged—a freedom that allows us to live with joy and inner peace.

A pure heart is not reached suddenly, nor is it a goal reserved for those who have never sinned. On the contrary, it is the result of a constant battle in which each confession, each effort to distance oneself from evil, and each small victory over temptation strengthens the soul. As soldiers in this spiritual war, young people are called to defend their hearts as if they were a fortress, protecting them from the invasions of sin and distractions that lead them away from God.

The path to a pure heart requires discipline but is also filled with hope. Falling and getting back up is part of the Christian life. Confession is not just a remedy for the fallen but a path of transformation that purifies us and brings us closer to God. With each fall, there is a new opportunity to rise stronger and more determined to fight for that purity that ultimately allows us to “see God” not only in eternity but in our daily lives.

In this battle, prayer is our fortress, and God’s grace is our shield. The sacraments, especially the Eucharist and confession, are our most powerful weapons to fight against the temptations that stain the heart. By persevering in this fight, young people will discover that true freedom does not lie in following the impulses of the moment but in living a coherent life centered on the love of God and the sincere pursuit of good.

A pure heart is a strong heart, a heart that does not fear challenges because it is anchored in eternity. Young people who strive to live in purity are not only defending their dignity but are building a life with purpose, oriented towards what truly matters. This battle is worth it because it is the only war that leads to true happiness: to live in the light of God, free from the weight of sin, and full of the peace that only He can give.

Purity of heart is not a distant ideal. It is an achievable goal through daily struggle, through the effort to practice virtue, through sincere repentance, and through commitment to a life centered on the love of God. Every young person is called to this struggle, to this challenge of building a strong and clean heart that reflects the beauty and light of God. And with each battle won, they will come closer to that divine vision that Jesus promised to the pure in heart.

Praise for the modest and chaste woman:

Woman of virtue and divine grace,

Your modesty is your greatest beauty,

In a world that seeks appearances,

You shine with the light of discretion.

Your heart beats with purity and sincerity,

Your smile is a gift of kindness,

Your gaze, a refuge of peace and tranquility,

Where the soul finds its home.

Your chastity is a shield of honor,

That protects your heart and soul,

Your modesty, a veil of mystery,

That attracts and captivates with its charm.

You are a closed garden, a hidden treasure,

A river of life that flows gently,

Your presence, a balm of comfort,

A refuge of love and understanding.

Your modesty is not weakness,

But strength and dignity,

Your virtue, a beacon of light,

That guides those who seek the truth.

You are a model of femininity,

An example of grace and elegance,

A gift from God to the world,

A treasure that we must cherish.

So let us continue to admire and value,

The modest and chaste woman,

Because in her heart beats the essence,

Of true beauty and nobility.

MODESTY SHOULD BE TAUGHT SINCE CHILDHOOD. THOSE WHO DID NOT ACQUIRE THIS VIRTUE THEN, WILL HARDLY PRACTICE IT AS TEENAGERS OR ADULTS

TO CHRISTIAN PARENTS

“The good of our soul is more important than the good of our body; and we have to prefer the spiritual welfare of our neighbor to our bodily comforts… If a certain kind of dress constitutes a grave and proximate occasion of sin, and endangers the salvation of your soul and others, it is your duty to give it up… O Christian mothers, if only you knew the future distress, peril and ill-restrained shame that you prepare for your sons and daughters by imprudently accustoming them to live barely clothed, and permitting them to lose the sense of modesty, you would be ashamed of yourselves, and of the harm done to the little ones entrusted to you by Heaven to be reared in a Christian dignity and culture."

MODESTY SHRINKS FROM THE SLIGHTEST IMMODESTY

Modesty foresees threatening danger, forbids us to expose ourselves to risks, demands the avoidance of those occasions which the imprudent do not shun. It does not like impure or loose talk, it shrinks from the SLIGHTEST IMMODESTY, it carefully avoids suspect familiarity with persons of the other sex, since it brings the soul to show due reverence to the body, as being a member of Christ (1 Cor. 6:15) and the temple of the Holy Ghost.

WHAT WOMEN THINK OF MALE CHASTITY

It’s surprisingly rare for a woman to look down on a guy who wants to guard the innocence of the relationship. To test this, I asked the thousand young women in my survey the following question: “If you were going too far with a guy, and he gave you a kiss on the forehead and said, “I think we need to slow down. I respect you too much to do all this with you, and I want to fall in love with you for all the right reasons,” would you find him more attractive, or less attractive?”

Almost 100 percent of the girls—995—said that they would find the guy more attractive. One girl said this was “because he was thinking about us and not just him.”

Another girl remarked, “I’m not going to lie. At first, I would be thinking, ‘What? What kind of guy says that?’ But then later that night I would be thinking, “I really like this guy.’” I posed a final question to these girls: “Some guys fear that being a virgin is embarrassing. How would you feel if a guy saved his virginity for you, his bride?” Again, the responses overwhelmingly indicated the attractiveness of purity. Here are some of their replies:

“He is the kind of guy I’d need to snatch up before the rest of the billions of girls did.”

“Stop worrying about what others say. It means so much if you wait!”

“That is hot.”

“It’s okay to be a virgin. In fact, most girls prefer it.”

“It takes a lot for a guy to stay a virgin, and I love boys like that—who don’t care what
people think!!!”

“He’s more manly than most guys.”

“They shouldn’t be embarrassed. I’m not.”

“His bride is going to be lucky.”

“Thank God for guys like him.”

“A lot of girls like myself find it geeky when a guy is scared if he’s a virgin. He should be
proud.”

“I’d feel like a true princess, because that’s how I want to feel on my wedding night.”

“I’d want him more!”

“This is the most beautiful thing a man can give his bride. It sums up the essence of
being a man in one choice. He has promised his whole self, including his body.”

“Awesome. I won’t feel like I’m all his past girlfriends.”

“He can respect you more if he respects himself”.

CATHOLIC COURTSHIP MUST BE CHASTE, FOR IT SEEKS THE GOOD AND THE VIRTUE OF THE OTHER PERSON

When sex becomes the soul of a dating relationship, the couple misses the opportunity to work on the qualities that make for lasting love. Things such as friendship, family, time, spirituality, trust, patience, and purity get less attention. As a result, the overall health of the relationship can wither. A sense of uneasiness begins to settle upon the heart of the woman. Because the foundation of love is weak and the life of the relationship is resting on lust, she feels an increasing threat that the end is inevitable. She knows it, and the truth scares her.

About Modesty

"For modesty foresees threatening danger, forbids us to expose ourselves to risks, demands the avoidance of those occasions which the imprudent do not shun. It does not like impure or loose talk, it shrinks from the slightest immodesty, it carefully avoids suspect familiarity with persons of the other sex, since it brings the soul to show due reverence to the body, as being a member of Christ (1 Cor. 6:15) and the temple of the Holy Spirit".

Manly Chastity

It is extremely rare to find a woman who despises a man who wants to protect the innocence of a relationship. To prove the latter, I made the following question to one thousand girls: “If you were going too far with a boy and he gave you a kiss on your forehead and told you: ‘I think we should take it easy. I respect you too much to continue doing these things with you, and I want to fall in love with you for the right reasons’, would you find it attractive or not?

Almost one hundred percent of the girls – 995 – answered that they would find the boy even more attractive. One of the girls said: “that would mean he is thinking about the two of us and not just about himself.”

For both genders.
I made one last question to these same girls: “Some guys believe that being a virgin is embarrassing. How would you feel if a guy kept his virginity for you, who, in the future, will become his wife?” Once again, the answers overwhelmingly demonstrated the attractiveness of purity. Here are some of the answers provided:

- “He would be the kind of guy I would have to win before all the other billions of girls did it.”
- “Stop worrying about what people say. It means so much if you wait!”
- “That is passionate!”
- “It is ok to be a virgin. Actually most of the girls prefer it that way.”
- “It is very difficult for a guy to keep his virginity, and I love guys like that, who are not influenced by what other people think.”
- “He would be more manly than most of the other guys.”
- “They should not be embarrassed. I am not.”
- “His wife will be very lucky.”
- “Thank God for guys like them.”
- “There are many girls, like myself, who think it is silly when a guy is afraid of being a virgin. He should be proud of it!”
- “I would feel like a princess because that is the way I want to feel on my wedding night.”
- “I would love him even more!”
- “That is the most beautiful gift a man can give to his wife. It is the essence of being a man summed up in one single decision. He has promised her his whole being, including his body.”
- “Impressive! I would not feel I am with all his previous girlfriends.”
- “He will be able to respect you more if he respects himself.”

Woman, Your Indecent Fashions Crucify Me Again

O, woman, look at Me, scourged and crowned with thorns! Contemplate My wounds…! Then listen and reflect.

I was like a meek lamb during my earthly life. I went to Calvary without opening My mouth to defend Myself.

I treated the Samaritan woman with kindness and she converted. I touched the heart of Mary Magdalene, the sinner, and turn her into a saint.

When I walked through the streets of Palestine, I spoke words of light, peace and love. My teachings were as sweet as honey.

But one day, when I divinely saw through the centuries how evil impetuously flooded the world and offended My temples, I uttered words of fire: “Woe to the world because of scandals!... Woe to him through whom scandals come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he cast into the sea.”

He who utters this woe is a God that has been abandoned by many priests, nuns and seculars who do not live according to what I preached. It is I, Jesus Christ, who suffered so much to save the souls. It is I, the supreme Judge of Mankind, of that same mankind that crucifies Me again with their indecent fashions. I, who utter the eternal sentence of Heaven or Hell.

O woman, you who follow the immodest fashions, reflect and think seriously for a moment about the grave scandals you cause in those who look at you, who desire you and hurt you with their vulgar words because of your tight, transparent, revealing and short clothing.

O woman, why do you offend My temples by exhibiting your body?

Why do you only seek to please and tempt men?

Why do you transform My house of prayer into an anatomy hall wherein bare heads, torsos, extremities and even the brand of your underwear can be seen?

My temples are profaned because of your sensual and provocative clothing.

Tell me, O woman, where are your virtues? Your modesty, decency and humility, where are they?

Is your immodest clothing different to the clothes of an atheist? No, not at all! You may deceive yourself by saying “There is nothing wrong in following the fashion. Other women do it, too… and there are priests who not only do not forbid it but even accept it.”

You may deceive yourself with this, but the reality is very different. The improper behavior of so many women, even if they are Christians, does not justify your own bad behavior.

If other women want to be eternally condemned by following what the world preaches to them, why would you want to be condemned, too?

All the sins that you cause with the trousers, shorts, mini-skirts, transparent and low-cut blouses and dresses, bare backs and navels, that you wear and show inside and outside the temple are attributable to those who look at you, but above all they are attributable to you for being the voluntary cause of them.

I, the Divine Legislator, said: “Whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The morals that I taught is one, inviolable and eternal, while the fashions are countless. My Church has no fashions. They belong only to the world.

If you really love Me, you must follow My example and live a life of abnegation and sacrifice. Therefore, you must abandon all fashions that are against morals and faith.

Narrow is the door that leads to Heaven and wide the door that leads to Hell. The great majority choose the latter.

To be against immodest fashions and not to wear indecent clothes is very difficult, and it is necessary to love Me very much to not being dragged by them.

Both men and women are more concerned about following the latest fashions, than about imitating My life, that was filled with austerities.

I was sent to the world not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

You were sent to the world not to live, do and wear whatever you want, but to make my Holy Will.

You are either with Me, or against Me.

Either you are with Me, or you are with the immodest fashions.

What you choose will give you an eternity of My glory, or an eternity of sorrows.

When death takes you away from this world that is filled with vanities and luxuries, and you stand before Me to be judged, seeing all the sins that men committed by looking at your sparsely covered body, you will be ashamed. What will you say to defend yourself? Woe to you, woman, because of your scandals! Woe to you that lost all sense of decency and shame! Why do you behave like this? Why do you crucify Me again with the nails of your immodesty?

What bitterness I feel when you receive Me in Communion in a disrespectful manner, when I have to enter into your body that is the cause of so many sins, and a bad example for the women that you call with disdain and scorn “old-fashioned”.

I assure you that many of those “old-fashioned” women are with Me, while many “modern” women that lack decency and modesty are “enjoying” in Hell.

The marriages that are celebrated today are also a slap in My face, when the bride and bridesmaids approach the altar half naked, just as the majority of their friends.

They are so hypocritical that being half naked they wear around their necks beautiful crucifixes, as a sign of their “great catholicity”.

The truth is that they are whited sepulchres. They are luxurious on the outside and devoid of humility and charity on the inside.

Woe unto those priests who are afraid of or do not want to forbid the profanation and desecration of My Temples!

Many of them are seduced by their presence, and do not want to be strict in the performance of their duties.

I was betrayed by a false apostle. And today, there are false priests, religious and laypersons who work clandestinely to destroy My Church.

They distort my doctrine by allowing all kinds of things and by creating an easy Christianity. The most profane things and situations can be seen in My Temples: make-up, wigs, jewelry, amulets, sunglasses, transparent fabrics. While others eat, smoke, talk, sleep, flirt, browse, walk around admiring the works of art, etc, etc. as if they were on a picnic. Woe unto them!

They are turning my House of Prayer into a place of sin… and nobody defends Me.

Everybody stays silent, leaves and no one sees anything, they deny me just as the day I was crucified.

No one takes risks for Me, they wash their hands like Pilate did.

Where are those who will give their life for Me?

If a politician, actor or singer tells them “do this” or “wear that”, everyone follows their advice. I, on the other hand, offer them an eternal gift provided they fulfill My commandments and almost no one takes notice of My invitations.

Woe unto my nuns that fail to advice their pupils in their institutions and schools about the proper and correct way of dressing. Woe unto those religious women that adapt their garments to those of mundane women! Their sins are exhausting My patience!

Woe unto those fathers and mothers that, following the immoral rhythm of the fashions, pervert their children and make them the cause of scandal.

Woe unto all those seculars that do not advice strongly enough their mistaken brothers about the need and obligation to abandon all fashions and actions that distort My Gospel.

Woe unto them who, in one way or another, encourage, commercialize and allow all kinds of nakedness! I know that they seek to corrupt women, so they can easily destroy my Church, family and countries.

I say to all of you that the responsible for a sin is he who commits it, but also he who has the duty to prevent it and cowardly does nothing.

“Severe measures are taken to fight against hunger, pests, poverty and impurities in the atmosphere, but the contamination of the spirits is contemplated with complacency.” (Paul VI)

My justice destroyed the immoral cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. But the punishment that will fall upon shortly will be much worse, as it has been announced by My Holy Mother in La Salette, Lourdes, Fatima and other places.

O souls, who are stuck in moral mud, living an easy and licentious Christian life, spreading death everywhere. Look at Me crucified, meditate on Hell, the final destination of so many souls that once lived indulging in all kinds of pleasures, fashions and entertainments. What will become of you?

O woman, when you were alive you were praised, applauded, admired, imitated and followed because of your countless exhibitions: who remembers you now? Where are all your achievements? Where is your money, jewelry and fame? Where are the parts of your body that you enjoyed showing?

They are being consumed by the eternal fire, a fire that devours without killing.

Meanwhile, all those women who led decent and modest lives, enduring bitter criticisms and hurtful jokes about their decency and respect for Me, will enjoy eternally of My company and the company of My Mother.

If thy hand, or thy foot, scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.

If you fear and respect men and fashions more than Me, you are not worthy of Me.

I say to every man and woman: “Depart from the offensive and sinful fashions, even at the cost of losing your family, friends, money, fame and life itself.”

I invite my faithful bishops, priests, religious and seculars to defend my Cause and My Temples with prudent courage from the obscene and shameful fashions. If you do not do this, the arm of My justice will befall on you who have the obligation to give testimony of my life.

Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.
