The film tells the story of Abby Johnson, director of a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, until she became an advocate of the pro-life cause in 2009. Despite the boycott of several media outlets, there are already more than 1,700 theaters where the film is being shown in the United States.
The pro-life film “Unplanned” has raised $ 6.1 million in the first weekend in the United States, despite the fact that Twitter temporarily blocked its official account and the limited media coverage.
In a statement, Pureflix CEO Michael Scott claimed, “We are very happy for the success of this film. To bring the story of Abby Johnson to audiences and have them show up in such large numbers shows how the topic of abortion is so important to bring to audiences.”
The film, which was released on March 29, has overcome media censorship, as well as MPAA "R" rating, received last month, which means that minors under 17 must watch the film in the company of an adult.
Co-directors Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman said in a statement, “We are thrilled, gratified and humbled. We are so pleased that the American people have responded with such an enormous outpouring of support at the box office.”
The initial success of Unplanned means that it will also be adding another 600 screens for its second week run, putting the total at around 1700 screens.
It should be noted that several cable television channels refused to broadcast promotional advertisements of "Unplanned". According to Hollywood Reporter, Lifetime, Hallmark, HGTV, among others, are part of the list.
"This film can be that spark to attract more hearts and minds to the understanding of the value of life," he said.
Michael Scott also said trailer views hovered at around 250,000. That stat swelled to 1.7 million views by Saturday morning.
