United States: Kamala Harris and Catholicism
President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris
Following President Joe Biden’s recent withdrawal from the race for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris immediately emerged as the Democratic candidate most likely to counter former President Donald Trump’s candidacy, although she has not yet received her party’s nomination.
What is her attitude towards Catholics?
The site Catholic News Agency (CNA) assessed her anti-Catholic actions throughout her political career. With a Christian father and a Hindu mother, Kamala Harris was raised between the two religions. As an adult, “she is a member of a black Baptist church.”
Harris’ political career has been marked by more or less open opposition to Catholicism: “she consistently promotes abortion, scrutinized the appointments of Catholic judges, opposes pregnancy centers and pro-life activists. She adopted gender ideology” and her attitude “has endangered religious freedom.”
Strongly supports abortion
As Vice President, “Harris led the Biden-Harris administration’s numerous efforts to promote abortion, including codifying Roe v. Wade abortion standards into federal law,” recalls CNA.
In a 2023 interview, Harris “criticized states that passed pro-life laws and urged Congress to pass legislation establishing federal standards for abortion” to prevent the enforcement of those laws. In 2022, she dared to claim that “religious Americans could support abortion without abandoning their faith.”
Suspicious analysis of judge candidates who are members of the Knights of Columbus
As a senator, Harris conducted a thorough investigation of three judge candidates due to their membership in the Knights of Columbus. “Her questions suggested that the candidates’ ties to the Catholic charity could make them biased, because the group adheres to the Church’s teachings on life and marriage,” comments CNA.
For example, she asked a candidate if he knew “that the Knights of Columbus oppose women’s right to choose [abortion] when he joined the organization.” Harris also asked if he thought abortion was “the killing of innocent people on a large scale.” What would happen if she knew “that the Knights of Columbus oppose marriage for all”?
Scandalous bias against a pro-life activist
As California Attorney General, Harris prosecuted a pro-life activist who conducted an undercover investigation at Planned Parenthood, showing “organization officials discussing the costs of fetal tissues and body parts,” a sale prohibited in the United States.
The activist was charged with 15 crimes “related to allegations of identity theft and invasion of privacy”: a case that is still ongoing. But Harris “never initiated an investigation against Planned Parenthood, a company from which she received thousands of dollars” for her electoral campaign.
Regulation against pro-life pregnancy centers
As California Attorney General, Harris “co-sponsored and promoted the Reproductive FACT Act, which requires pro-life pregnancy centers to post information on where an abortion can be obtained.”
Pro-life pregnancy centers reacted and “sued the Attorney General’s office, arguing that the law violated their First Amendment rights.” In 2018, the United States Supreme Court ruled in their favor. But the law has been used in other states to intimidate pro-life centers.
Gender ideology and religious freedom
In 2014, Harris “filed a brief along with 13 other attorneys general before the United States Supreme Court to force Hobby Lobby [a sales company founded by evangelical Protestants] to cover contraception in their employee health insurance policies, despite the company’s opposition,” because some of these products are abortifacients.
As a senator, she co-sponsored the “Do No Harm” Act and the Equality Act: the first would have ended religious exemptions for certain obligations, such as rules requiring coverage of abortion and sex change surgeries by the employer. The second would have prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
This means that a Catholic school could not refuse to accept a “trans” child in a girls’ school, or their access to girls’ bathrooms in a co-ed school, two cases that have arisen in U.S. schools. And a diocese would have to cover possible sex change operations for its employees.
Finally, as Vice President, Harris “continues to promote gender ideology. She has criticized Republican states that prohibit doctors from performing sex change operations on minors, that limit female sports only to biological women, and that prevent teachers from inculcating gender ideology to their students,” concludes CNA.
